Electric Circus Music
Artists who stayed gritty but still relevant?
The typical scenario
- young kid hears some music and gets inspired
- toils for years and years, paying dues making demo song
- one demo song hits
- gets signed
- pours heart and soul into 1st few records - critical acclaim, popular success
- gets fat and happy, groupies and cash
- makes middling 3rd lp, but still has it
- meets Erykah Badu/Yoko Ono/does some LSD laced Hashish with Bjork and makes their Electric Circus.
The standard trajectory is start out simple and end up grandiose.
Option B, is don't change a thing and then fade into obscurity.
Is there an option C?
Are there artists of any genre who don't complexify, but still manage to keep a good thing going?
LMFAO. you deserve props for the Q, I make that erykah badu joke all the time.
Ice Cube is probably the best example. But i think the way in which he established himself allowed him to STAY relevant from the go.
NaS is kinda a good shout depending on how you define gritty.
Guru is quite consistently gritty depending on your opinion of the Jazzmatazz albums. But even he dipped a bit.
The most consistent in that respect tend to be underground artists cause they have no physical way to sell out >_<.
Other artists like Styles P,Saigon etc. have tried but it always backfired. But you could argue they were never relevant.
