What kind of music would you want to expose a "music novice" to?
I've got a list of bands / singers that I think are essential ... but I don't want it to be overwhelming ... are there any good bands or even individual songs you can recommend ... for, say, a 15-year-old boy who's not too hip and has a crappy life but needs to be exposed to some good music?

Pink Floyd - sooooooooo awesome, like deep
Black Sabbath - awesome, most of the time
Mudhoney - you mentioned a couple grunge bands, try them...
AC/DC - great guitars...
the Clash - good classic punk
Bob Marley - for those who like reggae
Billie Holiday, Coltrain, etc.... - old classic blues
Spyro Gyra - smooth jazz....
