Quotes Emailed To Me This Week

'The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with friendship.'
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

"All this talk and turmoil and noise and movement and desire is outside of the veil; within the veil is silence and calm and rest." -- Bayazid al-Bistami

On Truth: Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth. --Teachings of Siddharta Gautama

Your love is invaluable to the Earth
and to those around you.
Even though you may not always see
the positive effect your love has on others,
trust, for it does.
Each time you offer love,
through a loving gesture, thought, or word,
you plant a seed of love,
and love always generates more love.
Trust and continue your loving work.

People say "I want peace."
If you remove I (ego), and your want (desire), you are left with peace.

Video of the day #4

VJ's and DJ's have an incredible power to disperse energy, positive or negative, throughout a crowd. It is a power which should not be abused or manipulated. Personally, as a DJ, if I do not leave my listeners feeling inspired, then I'm nothing more than a human CD player.

My motto is, "Music Makes My Mood!"

To all the DJ's out there, take a closer look at your playlist, the lyrics, the vibe you're creating. Is it really what you want to say? Even if it's one song. The energy and mood generated when the artist made the song, is being channeled through you.

Energy doesn't go away, it is either transferred or transformed.

Let's use our channeling powers to create mellow vibes and welcome equilibrium, for ourselves and our "followers". Peace ...

Vegan Activist Makes A Big Difference

Gary Yourofsky has been a vegan activist, giving lectures at universities across the country for 10 years. Here are some of the comments he's received from students recently:

I was a member of the audience during your lecture at Ohio State University [May 1] for the Animal Sciences class. I wanted to tell you that I have been a vegetarian since the moment I left the lecture hall. I am taking steps to become vegan, I have replaced milk and many dairy products already. I did, for the sake of my own curious mind, look into the factory farms ... and actually watched some other videos of the killing rooms. It showed me just how true everything you said really was that goes on in those places. It was really disturbing. I am taking steps to become more compassionate in my lifestyle, and I want to thank you for taking my blinders off. Between you and me- I feel so much better about myself physically and mentally since making the move to remove meat from my life. Thank you again. - S.N.

Thank you for coming to [ NJCU ]. I also wanted to thank you again for your words. You noticed I was upset with myself for continuing eating meat. I was ashamed that even though I heard your speech twice before, and [this] was my third, I only tried to slow down on eating meat instead of stopping it completely. I’m sorry i got a little emotional, is just that I was really upset with myself, I guess I didn’t want to admit how selfish I was being for only caring about the taste. In my philosophy classes we discuss about different issues that are happening and always wonder how can people do such things like-how can people mistreat others, how can they kill each other, go to war, and how can people care more about money than our own planet. In other words, commit injustices, and we don’t even realize that we commit it everyday at our dinning table, as you said. I stopped eating meat since that day and hopefully I could get my family to do the same thing. Besides eating meat, rice and beans, I’ve been raised eating chinese food because some of my family on my dad’s side are from Canton. My grandfather loved to cook and taught my family how to cook. Everyone loved his special touch and my father inherited as well. I really like they way they cook their vegetables. The chinese food I’ve tasted in my house when I was little is very different to the chinese food known in this country, I guess it’s more commercialized. There is a japanese market around my house where I can find certain ingredients, especially their vegetables that can’t just be found in every market. I used to cook certain dishes that included meat in them but now I going to experiment with veggies only : ) Thank you again and I might see you again in another class. - I.L.

I just wanted to thank you for your lecture today at NJCU. I have always been such an animal lover and have tried to do my part whether it was adopting from shelters, fostering shelter animals until they can find homes, donating time and money to shelters, I even once purchased a duck at a slaughterhouse when I was 9 using saved up lunch money. Unfortunately, the duck died no more than 3 hours later; however, at least he passed peacefully…not by being decapitated. I also gave it a proper burial in my backyard. Anyway, I never really thought of myself as a hypocrite until today. Yes, I do usually choose the Boca burgers over regular ones, and yes I do use soymilk instead of regular already. However, I never did it because it’s morally right … I mainly did it because I wanted to eat healthier. I was never aware of the process used to getting the meat I did eat. (I don’t mean that I wasn’t aware that an animal was killed for it. Of course I knew that.) I never realized what they went through before being served on the plate. It’s not so much that I feel bad because they had to be killed to get there, I mean yes, that’s a shame, but I’ve learned to deal with that. The part that really got to me was what they lived through to get there. Your lecture today really opened up my eyes. Keep doing what you’re doing, I think it’s great! Hopefully you can open the eyes of many others. Thanks again! - R.C.

One person can make A HUGE difference. I had the pleasure of attending one of his lectures earlier this year. It was very powerful. He's a terrific person, very passionate and selfless. We need more people like him.

Can love make you give up meat? - Video

I found this video with several different viewpoints on eating meat. It's pretty interesting to watch the little kids regurgitate what their parents told them.

When a vegetarian was asked, "Why do you think people still eat meat?" She said, "Because they don't care. Or they just don't know the truth."

I say, they do know, it's just easier to stay the way you are. Change takes work, and some people already know they don't have the strength to change. Too bad because that decision is costly, for them and the animals.

Origin of the BLUE MOON - 5/31/07

Joe Rao
SPACE.com Skywatching Columnist
SPACE.com Fri May 25, 12:45 AM ET

Thursday, May 31 brings us the second of two full Moons for North Americans this month. Some almanacs and calendars assert that when two full Moons occur within a calendar month, that the second full Moon is called the "Blue Moon."

The full Moon that night will likely look no different than any other full Moon. But the Moon can change color in certain conditions.

After forest fires or volcanic eruptions, the Moon can appear to take on a bluish or even lavender hue. Soot and ash particles, deposited high in the Earth's atmosphere can sometimes make the Moon appear bluish. Smoke from widespread forest fire activity in western Canada created a blue Moon across eastern North America in late September 1950. In the aftermath of the massive eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in June 1991 there were reports of blue moons (and even blue Suns) worldwide.

Origin of the term

The phrase "Once in a blue Moon" was first noted in 1824 and refers to occurrences that are uncommon, though not truly rare. Yet, to have two full Moons in the same month is not as uncommon as one might think. In fact, it occurs, on average, about every 32 months. And in the year 1999, it occurred twice in a span of just three months!

For the longest time no one seemed to have a clue as to where the "Blue Moon Rule" originated. Many years ago in the pages of Natural History magazine, I speculated that the rule might have evolved out of the fact that the word "belewe" came from the Old English, meaning, "to betray." "Perhaps," I suggested, "the second full Moon is 'belewe' because it betrays the usual perception of one full moon per month."

But as innovative as my explanation was, it turned out to be completely wrong.

More mistakes

It was not until the year 1999 that the origin of the calendrical term "Blue Moon" was at long last discovered. It was during the time frame from 1932 through 1957 that the Maine Farmers' Almanac suggested that if one of the four seasons (winter, spring, summer or fall) contained four full Moons instead of the usual three, that the third full Moon should be called a "Blue Moon."

But thanks to a couple of misinterpretations of this arcane rule, first by a writer in a 1946 issue of Sky & Telescope magazine, and much later, in 1980 in a syndicated radio program, it now appears that the second full Moon in a month is the one that's now popularly accepted as the definition of a "Blue Moon."

This time around, the Moon will turn full on May 31 at 9:04 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (6:04 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time).

But for those living in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, that same full Moon occurs after midnight, on the calendar date of June 1. So in these regions of world, this will not be second of two full Moons in May, but the first of two full Moons in June. So, if (for example) you live London, you'll have to wait until June 30 to declare that the Moon is "officially" blue.

Are there any FAT vegans?

It's really hard to be fat and vegan. Vegans read labels. However, your body will pack the pounds if you abuse alcohol or sweets. We watch our portions and choose wisely. Many exercise, do yoga, spinning or some other healthy activity.

Being a vegan makes you have self-control. Once you can get past the desire to eat meat, the rest is easy. If I have poor choices in my fridge, I'm human, I'll probably eat them because they're there. Self-control comes from not buying them.

HAVE A GREAT MEMORIAL DAY!!! ;-)

E. coli should convince you to go vegan

Here’s yet another reason to eat veggie burgers instead of hamburgers: PM Beef Holdings recently recalled 117,000 pounds of E. coli-contaminated beef that was sent to distributors and retailers in Illinois, Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Studies have shown that when contaminated meat is recalled, only about half of it is actually recovered — the rest remains in grocery stores.

You can protect yourself and your loved ones from E. coli, campylobacter, listeria and other bacteria that live in animal intestinal tracts and feces by always leaving meat and animal products at the grocery store.

Most farmed animals are crammed into filthy sheds and slaughtered on killing floors that are contaminated with feces, vomit and other bodily fluids. These unsanitary conditions have led to a rise in foodborne bacteria.

Plant-based foods, on the other hand, don’t normally harbor E. coli or other fecal bacteria. In fact, according to the USDA, 70 percent of food poisoning is caused by contaminated animal flesh. When fruits or vegetables do become contaminated with E. coli, it is because animal manure was used to fertilize crops or leaked into waterways. Cross-contamination can also occur when fruits and vegetables are placed on the same surface as meat.

As more and more people adopt a vegan diet, our dependence on cows and other farmed animals will diminish, therefore lessening the threat of E. coli contamination — and saving human and animal lives.

Vegetarians On a Plane - MAYBE NOT!

********************************************

Welcome to the revised version
of Airline Vegetarian Meals!

Last Updated May 7, 2007

Major changes have taken place in the airline industry in the area of customer services. Consumers who travel regularly have noticed that on domestic U.S. flights hot meals are no longer served in economy class. Instead, on domestic flights of 3 hours or longer the airlines are offering salads and sandwiches for sale on board. These items are not vegan, though some may possibly be vegetarian. Snacks like peanuts, pretzels, crackers, and cookies along with beverages are still served in economy class.

Business class and first class travelers still receive hot meals on domestic flights. Though vegetarian meals are available, vegan offerings may not be available on all airlines.

The airlines are actually encouraging domestic travelers to bring their own meals. Nutritionally and comfort-wise, bringing foods of your own choosing is the best option for vegan and vegetarian travelers. Foods that travel well include nuts and seeds, firm fruits like apples and pears, whole-grain crackers, and dried fruits. Sliced, marinated and baked tofu is a good companion to fresh fruits. Fruit and vegetable salads packaged in sturdy containers also travel well.

International travelers in economy, business, and first class will still have hot meals with some vegetarian and possibly vegan options available. Because customer services, especially food services, are constantly changing in the airline industry, we advise travelers to check in advance about the availability of special meals with their airline agent.

When bringing your own food aboard international flights, please note that many countries may not allow you to take uneaten produce off the plane. To prevent the spread of plant diseases and insect infestation, many countries have strict bans on the importation of agricultural products. Be sure to check with the airline or the consulate of the country you are visiting.

In addition to our chart indicating vegetarian choices, we include your comments, positive and negative, about your dining experiences on different airlines. The comments are grouped by airlines below the chart. Sign your comment, even though each report includes only your initials and the date received. Send your comments to vegparadise@vegparadise.com

[THE REVISED LIST]

If you travel as often as I do, you've noticed that requesting vegan meals yields few results. Check out this list of airlines and their responses to vegetarians/vegans.

I'm Happy For You, Really.

I'm paraphrasing
something
I heard recently,
that has
helped me through
some rough
times. Here goes:

"Rejoice in others' happiness.
God will do for you,
what he has done for them,
and more.
What might not seem
like progress now,
will be good for you
and your future in
the long run.
Have faith in your future."

It was much smoother
than that, of course.
You get the idea
though.

Happy Hump Day!!!!!

Vegans vs. Vegetarians? Rift? What Rift?

For centuries, people have been crowing about the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. While it's not for everyone, more and more folks want to reap the green goodness sown by means of a vegetable-dominated diet.

Traditionally, vegetarians have stood together as a group, but there is evidence of a growing rift among those who say "no" to meat. Why? It just may be that some noncarnivores think they are better than others.

"It is really a matter of great distress," says Dr. Stanley Sapon, professor emeritus of psycholinguistics at the University of Rochester.

Sapon, a long-time vegetarian crusader, is concerned about the effect of a division among the flock, which he says "would seriously diminish the power to effect social change that a single, large, unified organization can exert."

By definition, all vegetarians are not created equal.

Most dictionaries describe them in general as people who do not eat meat or fish but instead eat vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds and sometimes eggs and dairy products.

It's that last bit that sticks in the craw of many a hardcore noncarnivore. The problem is most people have very different ideas about the word and the lifestyle.

[Source]

This is absurd! I have plenty of vegetarian friends and there is no rift. Most of my vegetarian friends say they can't give up cheese. I happen to hate cheese that's why it was easy. Leave it to people to create drama where there is none.

HAVE A GLORIOUS WEEKEND

Walk after greasy food!

Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-ChiefSo You Ate a Burger and Fries. Now What?

Posted by Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief on Thu, May 10, 2007, 8:43 am PDT

We all have those moments...and the last thing you might want to do after a filling grease bomb is to go walk it off, but science says it's the smart thing to do - and not just for the sake of fitting into your skinny jeans.

Greasy foods can cause your arteries to lose elasticity for six hours, but exercise can come to the rescue. In one recent study, people who walked for 45 minutes within two hours after munching on fast food maintained the same healthy heart function as those who ate fat-free and lounged afterward.

Did someone say do it for your heart? Well, yes! Speaking of which, we may be more compelled by the number on the scale than the measure of our ticker, but there are other digits that you should know for your health, and one of those is your resting heart rate.

It's how fast your heart beats per minute when you're sitting totally still or just woke up in the morning, which is a measure of how trained your heart is. To find yours, take your pulse - ideally, first thing before you get out of bed.

Count the number of heartbeats for 10 seconds, then multiply that number by six to determine your heartbeats per minute (bpm). The normal range for an adult is between 60 and 80 bpm, although it can be lower in more physically fit people.

[Source]

I have an idea, don't eat greasy food. ;-)
