Another Letter from Al Gore

(Notice: Not one word about veganism or vegetarianism. Such a waste of resources. He could really do some good if he educated himself. What would be awesome is if someone hijacked these concerts with a vegetarian blimp or a streaker. I'd pay to see THAT!)

I PLEDGE:

1. To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth;

2. To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;"

3. To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2;

4. To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation;

5. To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal;

6. To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and,

7. To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.

Russell Brand - World's Sexiest Veggie

Russell has topped a poll of the sexiest male vegetarians

Russell Brand has been honoured with an unlikely accolade - he's been voted the male winner of Peta's World's Sexiest Vegetarians 2007 poll.

Morrissey, Tobey Maguire and Martin Shaw also featured in the line-up.

This is the second year running that the long-haired presenter has been given the title.

His Radio 2 show often features animal-related topics, including the fact that he has been veggie for 17 years, drinks soya milk and named his cat after one of Peta's biggest supporters, Morrissey.

Vegan Parents Could Lose Custody of Quintuplets

Tampa parents fighting for custody of their quintuplets

Tampa, Florida — Two Florida parents are fighting for custody of their quintuplets — thought to be the first born in the Tampa Bay area.

The quints are now ten years old.

According to Hillsborough County court files, Gayle and Jeff Nelson-Folkerson are both fighting for primary custody of the five children.

Among the issues to be discussed in court next month is the quints' diet. Their father alleges that their mother imposes a strict vegan diet. Vegans don't eat meat, eggs or dairy. But Jeff Nelson-Folkerson isn't alleging that the children are malnourished or unhealthy.

A court-appointed psychologist is evaluating the children.

Miami Vegan - Website Overhaul

I know I've said it before, but this time it's really going to happen. I'm bringing back some of my old posts and it's gonna be chaotic for sure!

Just bear with me during these couple of days. Your RSS Reader may revert back to October 2006 and I apologize. It's just there are too many good posts to just throw away.

So either I will take my blog down for a day or I'll just see how crazy it gets. Stay Tuned!

Al Gore Just Wrote Me A Letter

Not just to me ... anybody unfortunate enough to be on his mailing list. The answer is NO AL! I will not host a Live Earth Party because me and my friends have contacted you about adding veganism to your agenda. You've ignored us because your beef industry friends will oust you if you tell the truth. Any environmentalist that doesn't mention the livestock trade is clueless!

Sure, turn off your cell phones and unplug your computers. Let's see how long that lasts. Tell people to stop having so many kids and stop eating meat, then I'll host a party. Until then, sell those tickets to your "rock show" and I'll see you in 20 years. You'll probably be as dark as me by then, if the sun hasn't turned us into "beef" jerky.

L8A ;-)

[Letter from Al]

On July 7, more than 2 billion people will join together to watch the Live Earth concerts and demonstrate to our leaders that the time has come to solve the climate crisis.

Wherever you are that day, you can be part of the action. At events around the world, we are going to convert the potential energy of Live Earth into a global campaign. In thousands of homes, people will invite their friends and neighbors to watch the concerts and join the movement to solve the climate crisis.

NBC will be televising Live Earth (and even more extensive coverage will be available live on MSN) so turning your house into a Live Earth venue is easy. Will you commit to organize a Live Earth house party on July 7th? The parties will be fun and they'll make a difference.

http://joinliveearth.org/hellno

7.7.07 will be the one opportunity we have to bring hundreds of millions of new people into our campaign. We cannot let it slip by.

If you host a Live Earth Party, you'll have access to a special video I’ve made urging people to take action. Together, I know we can convince everyone attending these parties to get involved. In a few short hours, you and your friends can watch the concert, take action and at the end, upload a photo from your event that will be accessible to others taking part throughout the world. Through these parties, we can reach more people than ever before and build a truly global movement to solve the climate crisis.

Holding a Live Earth party is easy and we will have all the tools you need to make your party a success.

Sign up as a party host by visiting:

http://joinliveearth.org/hellno

Live Earth will be a unique moment when the uninterrupted and undivided attention of the world will be focused on the climate crisis. I need your help to really make it count.

Thank you,

Al Gore

A Vegan @ A Steakhouse!!!

So, my family invited me to Outback Steakhouse for Father's Day. Luckily, they don't read my blog so I can express myself FREELY!!!!

What THE hell were you thinking?

For all you non-vegans, let me just explain how tortuous it is to sit a vegan at a table full of ribs. Not because we're tempted, I don't even remember what ribs taste like. But, have you ever noticed that ribs ... look like F*ing RIBS??!!!!!!??!!!!!!

Watching my nieces and nephew eat flesh, is like watching a person feed a poisonous apple to a baby. Unreal!

I ate an overpriced house salad, and the lady looked at me funny when I asked for no cheese. She huffed and said, "Oh, wait let me write that down." Yeah, you do that ...

People can eat anywhere they want 7 days a week. I only get one holiday, my birthday. I'm not married, I don't have kids and I'm not a President ... so cut me some slack.

Next time you invite your vegan sister to a holiday dinner, think about how queasy she will feel on the drive home. Don't be Insensitive. Veganism is like a religion, no not really, but sitting at a table of carcass is just too much. Please, don't be offended (or surprised) if I skip the next one. Yup, it's that deep ... Peace :-<

Cookies for Vegans w/Food Allergies!

Ah, the cookie. A simple treat that brings delight to millions. The cookie is the choice companion to cups of tea, the pacifier of boo-boos, the financial means for Girl Guides everywhere, and the choice prize handed out by the snarkily sarcastic. But for people with food allergies, finding tasty cookies and treats that won’t make them swell up and fall down can be a difficult task, as most mainstream brands include eggs, dairy, nuts, definitely wheat, and sometimes even animal fat. What’s an allergic vegan to do?

These days, folks once deprived of the joy of simple baked goods have found new hope in Eden Hertzog’s New Moon Kitchen. This gourmet bakery started in 1997 offers a range of six types of cookies and four loaf-style cakes that are entirely nut, egg, dairy, wheat, cholesterol and preservative free. Whew! They’re also made without the use of trans-fats, and all items are certified Kosher and vegan. And the best part is - they’re all really good!

Another Back-sliding Vegan.

I don't get this! If a person becomes vegan for the right reasons, and not just to hop on the bandwagon, they would never return to eating meat.

_______________________

Roasted bone marrow, anyone?

So, I enjoy my meat. But it was not always so. In my 20s, I was a vegan. For 10 long years I eschewed the pleasures of the (animal) flesh. After growing up on a traditional diet of meat-and-two-veg, I'd become a vegetarian at 18.

On holiday with some art student friends, I discovered it was possible to eat what seemed then to be interesting food without eating animals. For me it was a short journey from vegetarian to vegan, which seemed ethically more consistent and had added radical kudos. This was the 80s, when meat was usually poor quality factory-farmed and as leftie students kicking against Thatcher's Britain, the personal was always political.

Returning to university, I taught myself a repertoire of sludgy vegan meals, usually involving tins of tomatoes or kidney beans. Since anyone cooking anything was a novelty, nights chez JD proved popular, and pretty soon most of my friends had also taken up the vegan cudgels.

Leaving university to pursue a career in music, the rest of my band were vegan, as were our road crew. We even had our footwear supplied by the non-leather shop Vegetarian Shoes. Two of the band attempted (and failed) to set up a vegan co-op along the lines of the one Jay Rayner describes in Vauxhall.

But when my band split up (musical and non-musical differences, but none that were dietary) and I got a "proper" job in journalism, I began to find it much harder to avoid eating dairy produce. A few years followed as a vegetarian, feeling guilty about softening my position and increasingly longing for meat and fish.

I had several moments of clarity. One came at a wedding meal in Sitges in Catalonia. My fellow guests, dozens of them, tucked in to the most beautiful seafood I had ever seen, while I picked listlessly at a particularly depressing salad. Similar experiences followed on subsequent holidays, and I realised that my veggie days were numbered.

Deaf Dolphin Delivers Calf - Precious!!

Mon Jun 11, 9:46 PM ET

KEY LARGO, Fla. - A stranded deaf Atlantic bottlenose dolphin delivered her calf Monday at a marine mammal rehabilitation center in the Florida Keys. The unnamed calf is approximately 42 inches long and weighs about 30 pounds, according to officials at the Marine Mammal Conservancy.

"The calf looks great. It's swimming real well and breathing normally," said MMC president Robert Lingenfelser

The calf's mother, Castaway, has been vocalizing to the calf and the baby has answered back, said Lingenfelser.

But Lingenfelser said he is certain that Castaway cannot process the calf's return sounds.

"Castaway's vocalizations are not normal," Lingenfelser said. "She speaks in a monotone, similar to the way that people who cannot hear speak."

Because Castaway can't hear, MMC officials installed a dolphin "chat line" of sorts, electronically connecting Castaway's habitat with a lagoon at Dolphins Plus, a research and interactive educational facility a few miles away. Underwater speakers and microphones were installed at both locations and connected via phone lines donated by AT&T Florida.

Officials hope the calf will develop communications' skills by speaking to dolphins at Dolphins Plus when the system is fully turned on soon.

Insensitive Non-Vegan Friends!!!! :-(

Check out this extremely insensitive article by a woman with a vegan male friend. She does everything she can to make him feel uncomfortable. I've been a victim of the same thing. I just hope he stopped being friends with her. It's not worth it sometimes! Let them eat bone marrow!

SINS OF THE FLESH

MarrowspoonI have four friends. I mean, sure, I have more friends elsewhere, but at the University of Chicago, where I'm a graduate student in a small program, there are four people that I see with any regularity. I like them. They're fun. But one of them is something I have never known before: a vegan. That means he eats nothing that comes from an animal. No meat. No dairy. No eggs. He does this for both ethical and health reasons, which seem to have panned out well for him, since he's over thirty and looks like a 16-year-old lifeguard. Nevertheless, I am a carnivore. An elementary school food-chain chart would show me eating my vegan friend. I've always liked the challenge of roasting a bird, but my first Chicago winter, which I survived through braising alone, sealed the deal, and at this point all I need is a hyena-skin thong and I will officially be a cavewoman.

Sometimes I have to double check with him about what he's allowed to eat. "Surely you can have camembert," I suggest. "A little knockwurst won't hurt. Put some hair on your chest!" I feel like a conservative grandmother who refuses to accept that her grandson is gay, and holds up Playboy centerfolds in front of him with a lewd "How 'bout those knockers, eh?" Either I completely forget his dietary restrictions (I hand him half a tuna sandwich and tell him he can thank me later) or I instinctively treat him like he is a weakling with a disease. "Do you need help down the stairs?" I turn to him by mid-morning and with a sympathetic nod of my head I inquire if he's tired. I think it's fair to say that I have been less than sensitive, and he's been a great sport.

As one of my four friends, he comes to my many meat-centric dinner parties. When I unwrapped my gorgeous 9-lb bone-in leg of lamb for Easter lunch and discovered the leg joint was intact, he watched me dance it across the counter, puppeteering raw meat high-kicks and singing "Luck Be a Lady." He even smiled accommodatingly. But there is a line, with even the friendliest, most understanding vegan. And that line was drawn by Fergus Henderson. I suspect that any recipe from Henderson's The Whole Beast: Nose to Tail Eating would not go over well with your standard vegan, but if there is an utter epitome to meat-eating, Henderson's roasted marrow bones would be it. The roasted bones ooze fat and gelatinous, rendered marrow that requires cro-magnon effort to scoop onto toasts. I served them triumphantly. Empty bones were thrown down, chins were wiped of grease. And that was it--after countless roasts, osso buco, a lamb cancan and, now that I think about it, even the ultimate vegan insult of an Easter egg hunt (whoops), I looked at his face and saw that Bone Marrow Night was the last straw. He looked ill. I felt terrible. I hope that cheesecake I sent him smoothed things over alright.

Global Warming: London to Promote Vegetarianism

'Fight Global Warming, Give Up Meat'

Kevin McCandless

Correspondent

London (CNSNews.com) - A leaked e-mail message has led to speculation that the British government plans to promote vegetarianism as part of a broader strategy to fight climate change.

In a message sent earlier this year to a vegetarian lobbying group, the Environment Agency -- a statutory body set up under a 1995 law -- said it was considering ways to deal with global warming, one of which was to encourage people to eat less meat.

The agency said that it was unlikely that most people would swear off meat entirely and that the issue would have to be introduced "gently" for fear of alienating the public.

The official who authored the e-mail message also wrote that the potential benefits to the climate of a vegan diet could be "very significant." A vegan diet is one that shuns all meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products.

"Future Environment Agency communications are unlikely to ever suggest adopting a fully vegan lifestyle, but certainly encouraging people to examine their consumption of animal protein could be a key message," the official wrote.

The e-mail was sent to the British chapter of a group called Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (Viva), in response to its queries about promoting vegetarianism. Viva then released the message to the media.

In recent years, vegetarian groups around the world have increasingly turned to the issue of climate change to promote their cause, warning that raising livestock produces large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane - "greenhouse gases" blamed for global warming.

Cattle are also reported to cause large-scale land degradation, to pollute water, and to contribute to acid rain through the ammonia they generate.

A report released by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization last November charged that raising livestock produced more "greenhouse gases" globally than the international transportation system.

A spokesman for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) - the British government department that oversees the Environment Agency - said Monday the government was not encouraging people to give up meat altogether.

"The government is not telling people to give up meat," he told Cybercast News Service. "It isn't the role of government to enforce a dietary or lifestyle change on any individual. People need to make the decisions that are right for their own lifestyles."

The spokesman did say, however, that DEFRA was encouraging people to adopt diets that have a lower environmental impact.

This could involve eating food that hasn't been transported long distances by air or truck, he said, and reducing the amount of "animal protein" a person eats.

Viva spokesman Justin Kerswell said Monday that quitting eating meat was something each individual person could do to fight climate change.

British Vegetarian Society Su Taylor said that someone adopting a vegan diet would help the environment tremendously, but that a diet comprising only fish and grain would help as well.

"Nobody's talking about this," she said. "If people are going to make choices about how they can help the environment, they need to have all the choices on the table."

But the National Farmers' Union (NFU) said that meat and diary products are essential for a balanced diet.

"To suggest that people eating less meat and dairy products will have a significant impact on the fight against global warming seems rather dubious," said NFU spokesman Anthony Gibson.

"Hopefully [government] ministers will have more sense than to suggest simplistic and quite possibly counterproductive responses to what is a highly complex equation," he said.

Gibson added that the organization was committed to finding ways to reduce methane emissions by livestock.

Hallelujah!! My prayers have been answered. Finally the "environmentalists" have wised up. People will consistently change their eating habits before they remember to unplug their cell phones. Al Gore, I hope you're listening!! It's not too late to change your agenda by 7/7/07.

Too Much Red Meat = Hair Loss

Hair Loss :: Excessive read meat consumption causes hair loss

Men need to note that excessive red meat consumption can result in hair loss.

This was proved by a Japanese study that showed that the pre World War II diet of lean fish, tofu and lots of greens resulted in healthy heads of hair for Japanese men, but ever since they switched to modern meals of heavy meat, they have begun to lose their hair.

Blog Hop - Backsliding Vegan

This blog post made my day like I can't even tell you. This is a post by someone who was vegan for a year, but started eating meat again. Please finish reading it by clicking the link at the bottom. So Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! It would do Nina Planck good to read it also. ;-)

Irrelevant Rant

I was vegan for a little over a year. I was vegan for health reasons. My cholesterol and blood pressure were way too high. It’s not that I enjoyed being vegan. I mean, I was raised by a good southern mama who made fried chicken and pork chops. But there is no fried chicken worth dying for, so I stopped eating all animal products. No Meat. No Dairy. No Eggs.

About six months or so ago, I started to cheat a little (okay a lot). I’d see Chik-Fil-a and couldn’t help myself. I had a Big Mac. I had Popeye’s Fried Chicken (okay some chicken may be worth dying for).

Until today. I’ve been saying I am going to go back to veganism, and went to www.goveg.com to look for some recipes for new things I could try. I’d been eating vegan solid for over a year before I started to slip back into the meat again, so I have a pretty good idea of what to eat, but I wanted some new recipes anyway. But when I got there, I started watching videos like “meet your meat” and “30 reasons to go vegetarian” and I gotta tell ya, I couldn’t watch it all. It was too disturbing. It was some like silence of the Lambs, Hostel, Touristas, thing for animals. It was truly like watching a horror movie.

Is Soy Good For You?

Are there special concerns related to soy foods?

We include soy as one of the World's Healthiest Foods, and for good reason. It's the most widely grown and utilized legume in the world, with about 13,000 years of cultivation and over 5,000 research studies. There are studies that show soy to help regulate blood sugar, blood pressure, and estrogen balance. And there are studies showing soy intake to help prevent colon, breast, and prostate cancer, as well as atherosclerosis and post-menopausal hip fracture. It's seldom the case that a whole, natural food can be this widely used and studied for such a long period of time and have predominantly negative impact on our health.

Like all foods, soy is not a "magic bullet" and needs to be incorporated into a person's overall meal plan in a balanced and individualized way. We believe that soy needs to be eaten in moderation like all foods, as it is in Asia where it has been linked with promoting health potential. In Japan, for example, individuals seldom consume large quantities of soy at one time, as has often become the case with a "burger-replacement" type approach taken in the United States. The research makes it clear that when soy foods are consumed, traditional preparation methods - including the use of traditionally fermented soy products like fermented tofu, fermented miso, and fermented soy sauce - are best when it comes to our health.

At this point, no public health organization in the U.S. has recommended daily intake of soy products, including the National Cancer Institute, the American Heart Association and the American Dietetics Association. In 1995 in Japan, with all soy food products taken into account, the average intake was 50-70 total grams per day (not grams of soy protein, but of the entire food), which would translate into approximately 2 ounces per day. This is less than the amount ordinarily used in the United States with respect to a single serving of soymilk and the amount of tofu in a stir-fry. However, we've also become more and more concerned about the treatment of this food in the marketplace. Our concerns fall into three areas: (1) the growing disregard for traditional methods of preparing and consuming soy; (2) the increasing absence of whole soy foods in the marketplace; and (3) the genetic engineering of more and more soy.
