Is Meat Killing the planet? Yes ....
A SEA change in the consumption of a resource that Americans take for granted may be in store — something cheap, plentiful, widely enjoyed and a part of daily life. And it isn’t oil.
It’s meat.
...
Americans eat about the same amount of meat as we have for some time, about eight ounces a day, roughly twice the global average. At about 5 percent of the world’s population, we “process” (that is, grow and kill) nearly 10 billion animals a year, more than 15 percent of the world’s total.
Growing meat (it’s hard to use the word “raising” when applied to animals in factory farms) uses so many resources that it’s a challenge to enumerate them all. But consider: an estimated 30 percent of the earth’s ice-free land is directly or indirectly involved in livestock production, according to the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization, which also estimates that livestock production generates nearly a fifth of the world’s greenhouse gases — more than transportation.

Miami Ink - Thinks Fur Sucks!
In addition to being the star of the hit reality series Miami Ink, Ami James is the owner of one of the hottest bars in Miami, Love/Hate, and a legend in the tattoo world. Now he's showing us some skin and showing off his famous tattoos—alongside the tagline "Ink, Not Mink"—as part of PETA's anti-fur campaign.
Creating amazing art and tattoos isn't the only thing that Ami knows a thing or two about. He also knows about the realities of the fur industry and knows he would never support an industry that tortures and kills animals in the name of fashion.
Every year, millions of mink, foxes, raccoons, dogs, and cats are strangled, electrocuted, and even skinned alive by the fur industry. This is not something Ami will support in any way.
In PETA's interview with Ami, he tells us, "I was watching TV and then all of a sudden there was something about Roberto Cavalli's fashion and I saw people wearing cheetah furs and all sorts of crazy things like that … to the point where I got asked to do a Cavalli vodka design and I said, 'F*** no, I'm not doing it. I'll never do it.'"** Enter the contest - {Details}

5. [VeganChicago] Excerpt below about how vegans feel about the word "veg". It's a problem ...
The “Veg” moniker
Now alotta this may seem petty but I bring it up to explain a bit about how we got here and where we’re going. First of all I feel that “Veg”-anything does a disservice to the vegan cause (however that may be defined). It’s too generic and encompasses too many ideas. Many in the movement feel this is a good thing, to expose people to veganism through secondary issues, and it is very true for many. Historically this is how many of us came to be vegan, through other issues like vegetarianism, environmentalism etc. But I think it’s best to be completely honest and maintain blunt integrity with our message. People who honor that are the people we want to attract first and foremost anyway. Veganism came into its own off the heels of vegetarianism, but veganism is so much more than a vegetarian diet. It’s time to come out of the closet. We’re vegan dammit and we ain’t afraid to say so! Now now, don’t get scared or upset yet. We’re not becoming anti-vegetarian or anti-people-who-eat- meat or whatever. If anything we’re trying to do exactly the opposite.
I struggle with this myself sometimes ...

Japanese Whaling - Activists Persist
Activists vow to carry on disrupting Japanese whaling
by Madeleine CooreyFri Jan 18, 2:36 AM ET
A militant anti-whaling group vowed Friday to immediately resume harassing Japanese whalers as two of its activists were returned to their protest ship after being detained on board a harpoon vessel.
The two protesters, held aboard the Japanese whaler in Antarctic waters for two days, were handed over to an Australian customs vessel early Friday and later returned to their Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's ship.
The pair were released to the Australian customs ship, the Oceanic Viking, after a direct handover between the Japanese ship and that of the conservationists proved impossible to negotiate.
Australian Benjamin Potts said the Japanese crew had tried to throw him overboard when he and fellow activist, Briton Giles Lane, 35, clambered onto the harpoon ship to protest Japan's whaling programme during a high seas chase.
"Yeah they picked me up, two guys picked me up by the shoulders, and the gunner, the guy that shoots the whales, picked my legs up and they attempted to tip me over," Potts told Fairfax Radio Network back on the protest ship.
Potts, 28, pledged to resume action against the whalers.
"Well hopefully we'll continue with the chase, until such time as we have to head back," he also told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).
"We'll continue to harass the Japanese fleet and prevent them from whaling."

Kacey's Artist Statement:
A single word, smell or sound can bring back a memory that has been dormant in my mind for years, but it is so fleeting and delicate that I don't know if it actually happened in my subconscious or in reality. I use bubbles mixed with ink to stain the paper because they themselves are delicate. Underlying the stain and drawing, I intuitively write about the memory. I draw into the stains, using the memory as a source, pulling from it the environment where it occurred and the thoughts and feelings that it invokes. The actual process of making the art is my way of working through this tiny echo of a memory that could have never even happened. Writing about the memory, treating the paper with ink and finally executing it with graphite is a way for me to savor one single moment in time and wonder why this memory that seems so insignificant is being brought back to my thoughts.
