Dear Starbucks - What About Vegans, man?

Dear Starbucks Corporation,

Thank you so much for carrying Soy Milk. You would not get my business otherwise. However, there is absolutely nothing in your display case for vegans. Not one thing. You have pumpkin loaves, muffins, black and white cookies, scones etc. You even carry McDonald's style egg McMuffins with bacon and cheese. Not healthy at all, but I can see that you're willing to expand your inventory.

Not only are there no ingredients posted, but there is nothing specifically vegetarian or vegan. What's up with that? Yes, some vegans drink coffee. I rarely do but when I do, its a week long deal, every day practically.

So I beg you, please start carrying some vegan products so I can eat a little something with my Soy Latte or I'm going to have to start going to Offerdahls.

Thank you kindly,

Inga Ambrosia

T-Mex (South Beach) ~ Review

[Click Photos To ENLARGE]

T-Mex Evolutionary Restaurant
235 14th St
Miami Beach, FL 33139-4206
Phone: (305) 538-3009

This place used to be called San Loco. I ordered a Vegetarian Burrito with extra avocado. You can get it with beans or rice. They have a sauce called salsa verde which is basically shredded jalapeños. The bartender (above), who was very nice and energetic and had no idea I would review the place, warned me that I should be careful and crossed her heart. It had a little kick, but my taste buds must be dead from all the years of eating Haitian Picles and Jamaican Scotch Bonnet Peppers. And the old staple American Tabasco. The tagline on the menu says, "Mild, Hot, Serious or Stupid?" I should have asked for Stupid.

The burrito was good and it was only $3. They obviously have a larger version (which I had last year) and it has a lot more ingredients. Make sure you say, "No sour cream or cheese." Ask for the Veg Chili Loco sauce in whatever you choose.

Everything is made from scratch. The place was filled with people on a Friday night. It's dark and cozy in there. You feel like you are in a secret little hiding spot just for locals and people in the know, like me.

They also have Vegetarian Nachos, Tacos, Taco Burgers, Taco Salad and Enchiladas.

Check it out! =)

What Omnivores Take For Granted ...

1. Eating Cake - Last night I went to a party. They had birthday cake. I haven't had birthday cake in almost 4 years.

2. Buying Candy Bars - I spent 10 minutes in Walgreens looking for something chocolatey to eat. Nothing!

3. Pizza - Most pizza has butter and cheese on it. Not vegan friendly.

4. Going Out To Dinner - if someone invites me to dinner, I have to already decide that I'm going to eat plain baked potato or salad. No one ever recommends eating at a vegan or vegetarian restaurant. Everyone eats steak, chicken and fish in front of you, making you lose your appetite anyway.

5. Eating Soup - I love soup, especially on the rainy days Miami has been having. Soup has either beef broth, chicken stock, cream, milk, eggs, butter ... etc.

6. Cookies - Wild Oats has some Vegan Cookies that are to die for. Also, I just discovered Famous Amos makes their own version of OREOS ... so good! Most people can pick up a box of cookies and go to town without worries. They should worry but they don't.

Ah well, nobody made me become a vegan, Just wanted you to know ... it ain't easy being GREEN baby ... but
I wouldn't change it for the world.;-)

Anne Hathaway Turned Off By Meat

FARM LIFE TURNS HATHAWAY OFF MEAT

ANNE HATHAWAY

Actress ANNE HATHAWAY became a strict vegetarian on the Irish set of period movie BECOMING JANE because she couldn't bear to eat meat after watching the birth of lambs at a farm nearby. The Devil Wears Prada star, who plays beloved English writer Jane Austen in the film, rarely eats meat - but life on a farm in Ireland really turned her off. And having fervent vegan James Cromwell as a co-star didn't help either. She says, "I'm a flexatarian which means I eat meat when I feel like I'm going to die or pass out, but I eat mostly vegetarian food. "That being said, we were filming alongside a sheep farm and it was calving season and all these little lambs were going around and were so alive. I'd never eaten lamb but I just couldn't eat any meat while I was making the movie. "James Cromwell was there and he's this hardcore, intimidating vegan, so I especially felt uncomfortable having anything to do with eating animals around him."

Veg Band - Rise Against Has Something To Say To America!

Chicago hardcore group Rise Against have never been afraid to take a social stance -- both in their songs and on a personal level. Accordingly, while keeping alive the old-school tradition of punk music as an instrument of political change, they make it a point to walk it like they talk it -- the band members are fervent animal-rights activists, to cite one example. Lead singer Tim McIlrath, who takes very seriously his responsibility as an American to voice his opinion that the nation should live up to its ideals, has listed five ways in which he believes the government and the American people have not kept up their end of the bargain. Another Back-sliding Vegan.

I don't get this! If a person becomes vegan for the right reasons, and not just to hop on the bandwagon, they would never return to eating meat.

_______________________

Roasted bone marrow, anyone?

So, I enjoy my meat. But it was not always so. In my 20s, I was a vegan. For 10 long years I eschewed the pleasures of the (animal) flesh. After growing up on a traditional diet of meat-and-two-veg, I'd become a vegetarian at 18.

On holiday with some art student friends, I discovered it was possible to eat what seemed then to be interesting food without eating animals. For me it was a short journey from vegetarian to vegan, which seemed ethically more consistent and had added radical kudos. This was the 80s, when meat was usually poor quality factory-farmed and as leftie students kicking against Thatcher's Britain, the personal was always political.

Returning to university, I taught myself a repertoire of sludgy vegan meals, usually involving tins of tomatoes or kidney beans. Since anyone cooking anything was a novelty, nights chez JD proved popular, and pretty soon most of my friends had also taken up the vegan cudgels.

Leaving university to pursue a career in music, the rest of my band were vegan, as were our road crew. We even had our footwear supplied by the non-leather shop Vegetarian Shoes. Two of the band attempted (and failed) to set up a vegan co-op along the lines of the one Jay Rayner describes in Vauxhall.

But when my band split up (musical and non-musical differences, but none that were dietary) and I got a "proper" job in journalism, I began to find it much harder to avoid eating dairy produce. A few years followed as a vegetarian, feeling guilty about softening my position and increasingly longing for meat and fish.

I had several moments of clarity. One came at a wedding meal in Sitges in Catalonia. My fellow guests, dozens of them, tucked in to the most beautiful seafood I had ever seen, while I picked listlessly at a particularly depressing salad. Similar experiences followed on subsequent holidays, and I realised that my veggie days were numbered.

Global Warming: London to Promote Vegetarianism

'Fight Global Warming, Give Up Meat'

Kevin McCandless

Correspondent

London (CNSNews.com) - A leaked e-mail message has led to speculation that the British government plans to promote vegetarianism as part of a broader strategy to fight climate change.

In a message sent earlier this year to a vegetarian lobbying group, the Environment Agency -- a statutory body set up under a 1995 law -- said it was considering ways to deal with global warming, one of which was to encourage people to eat less meat.

The agency said that it was unlikely that most people would swear off meat entirely and that the issue would have to be introduced "gently" for fear of alienating the public.

The official who authored the e-mail message also wrote that the potential benefits to the climate of a vegan diet could be "very significant." A vegan diet is one that shuns all meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products.

"Future Environment Agency communications are unlikely to ever suggest adopting a fully vegan lifestyle, but certainly encouraging people to examine their consumption of animal protein could be a key message," the official wrote.

The e-mail was sent to the British chapter of a group called Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (Viva), in response to its queries about promoting vegetarianism. Viva then released the message to the media.

In recent years, vegetarian groups around the world have increasingly turned to the issue of climate change to promote their cause, warning that raising livestock produces large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane - "greenhouse gases" blamed for global warming.

Cattle are also reported to cause large-scale land degradation, to pollute water, and to contribute to acid rain through the ammonia they generate.

A report released by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization last November charged that raising livestock produced more "greenhouse gases" globally than the international transportation system.

A spokesman for the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) - the British government department that oversees the Environment Agency - said Monday the government was not encouraging people to give up meat altogether.

"The government is not telling people to give up meat," he told Cybercast News Service. "It isn't the role of government to enforce a dietary or lifestyle change on any individual. People need to make the decisions that are right for their own lifestyles."

The spokesman did say, however, that DEFRA was encouraging people to adopt diets that have a lower environmental impact.

This could involve eating food that hasn't been transported long distances by air or truck, he said, and reducing the amount of "animal protein" a person eats.

Viva spokesman Justin Kerswell said Monday that quitting eating meat was something each individual person could do to fight climate change.

British Vegetarian Society Su Taylor said that someone adopting a vegan diet would help the environment tremendously, but that a diet comprising only fish and grain would help as well.

"Nobody's talking about this," she said. "If people are going to make choices about how they can help the environment, they need to have all the choices on the table."

But the National Farmers' Union (NFU) said that meat and diary products are essential for a balanced diet.

"To suggest that people eating less meat and dairy products will have a significant impact on the fight against global warming seems rather dubious," said NFU spokesman Anthony Gibson.

"Hopefully [government] ministers will have more sense than to suggest simplistic and quite possibly counterproductive responses to what is a highly complex equation," he said.

Gibson added that the organization was committed to finding ways to reduce methane emissions by livestock.

Hallelujah!! My prayers have been answered. Finally the "environmentalists" have wised up. People will consistently change their eating habits before they remember to unplug their cell phones. Al Gore, I hope you're listening!! It's not too late to change your agenda by 7/7/07.

Too Much Red Meat = Hair Loss

Hair Loss :: Excessive read meat consumption causes hair loss

Men need to note that excessive red meat consumption can result in hair loss.

This was proved by a Japanese study that showed that the pre World War II diet of lean fish, tofu and lots of greens resulted in healthy heads of hair for Japanese men, but ever since they switched to modern meals of heavy meat, they have begun to lose their hair.

Ground Beef Recall - E. Coli

Sun Jun 10, 7:25 AM ET

LOS ANGELES - A meat supplier has greatly expanded a ground beef recall, which now includes about 5.7 million pounds of fresh and frozen meat that may be contaminated with E. coli.

David Goldman, acting administrator of the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service, announced on Saturday that the recall would be expanded to include products with sell-by dates from April 6-April 20. The beef, sold in 11 Western states, was distributed by California-based United Food Group LLC.

Goldman said that none of the latest batch of suspect beef is in stores now because the product would be well past its expiration date, but consumers may still have some of the meat at home.

"It is important for consumers to look in their freezers," Goldman said.

The meat has been blamed for an E. coli outbreak in the Western states that resulted in 14 illnesses, spanning April 25 through May 18. All the patients have recovered.

On Wednesday, United Food Group expanded an initial recall of 75,000 pounds of ground beef, adding another 370,000 pounds based on "unspecified concerns" raised by the California State Department of Health Services. This meat had sell-by dates from April 29-May 6.

Gross! Vegans/Vegetarians never have to worry about these recalls, except for their family and friends that haven't given up meat. Very sad. Check your fridges and freezers. If this doesn't make you give up meat, nothing will.

Can love make you give up meat? - Video

I found this video with several different viewpoints on eating meat. It's pretty interesting to watch the little kids regurgitate what their parents told them.

When a vegetarian was asked, "Why do you think people still eat meat?" She said, "Because they don't care. Or they just don't know the truth."

I say, they do know, it's just easier to stay the way you are. Change takes work, and some people already know they don't have the strength to change. Too bad because that decision is costly, for them and the animals.

Vegetarians On a Plane - MAYBE NOT!

********************************************

Welcome to the revised version
of Airline Vegetarian Meals!

Last Updated May 7, 2007

Major changes have taken place in the airline industry in the area of customer services. Consumers who travel regularly have noticed that on domestic U.S. flights hot meals are no longer served in economy class. Instead, on domestic flights of 3 hours or longer the airlines are offering salads and sandwiches for sale on board. These items are not vegan, though some may possibly be vegetarian. Snacks like peanuts, pretzels, crackers, and cookies along with beverages are still served in economy class.

Business class and first class travelers still receive hot meals on domestic flights. Though vegetarian meals are available, vegan offerings may not be available on all airlines.

The airlines are actually encouraging domestic travelers to bring their own meals. Nutritionally and comfort-wise, bringing foods of your own choosing is the best option for vegan and vegetarian travelers. Foods that travel well include nuts and seeds, firm fruits like apples and pears, whole-grain crackers, and dried fruits. Sliced, marinated and baked tofu is a good companion to fresh fruits. Fruit and vegetable salads packaged in sturdy containers also travel well.

International travelers in economy, business, and first class will still have hot meals with some vegetarian and possibly vegan options available. Because customer services, especially food services, are constantly changing in the airline industry, we advise travelers to check in advance about the availability of special meals with their airline agent.

When bringing your own food aboard international flights, please note that many countries may not allow you to take uneaten produce off the plane. To prevent the spread of plant diseases and insect infestation, many countries have strict bans on the importation of agricultural products. Be sure to check with the airline or the consulate of the country you are visiting.

In addition to our chart indicating vegetarian choices, we include your comments, positive and negative, about your dining experiences on different airlines. The comments are grouped by airlines below the chart. Sign your comment, even though each report includes only your initials and the date received. Send your comments to vegparadise@vegparadise.com

[THE REVISED LIST]

If you travel as often as I do, you've noticed that requesting vegan meals yields few results. Check out this list of airlines and their responses to vegetarians/vegans.

Vegans vs. Vegetarians? Rift? What Rift?

For centuries, people have been crowing about the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. While it's not for everyone, more and more folks want to reap the green goodness sown by means of a vegetable-dominated diet.

Traditionally, vegetarians have stood together as a group, but there is evidence of a growing rift among those who say "no" to meat. Why? It just may be that some noncarnivores think they are better than others.

"It is really a matter of great distress," says Dr. Stanley Sapon, professor emeritus of psycholinguistics at the University of Rochester.

Sapon, a long-time vegetarian crusader, is concerned about the effect of a division among the flock, which he says "would seriously diminish the power to effect social change that a single, large, unified organization can exert."

By definition, all vegetarians are not created equal.

Most dictionaries describe them in general as people who do not eat meat or fish but instead eat vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds and sometimes eggs and dairy products.

It's that last bit that sticks in the craw of many a hardcore noncarnivore. The problem is most people have very different ideas about the word and the lifestyle.

[Source]

This is absurd! I have plenty of vegetarian friends and there is no rift. Most of my vegetarian friends say they can't give up cheese. I happen to hate cheese that's why it was easy. Leave it to people to create drama where there is none.

HAVE A GLORIOUS WEEKEND

Be kind to your neighbors!! ;-)

Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive

[FORWARD]

Saturday, May 12th is the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Leave a bag with non-perishable (no frozen items and no glass jars please) goods next to your mailbox. Then your letter carrier will pick them up and deliver them to a local food bank. As vegetarians we can help them by providing plant-based goods. If we all participate we can make a big difference by donating vegetarian/vegan choices! Example of Non perishable goods:
35 million Americans are at risk of hunger. You can help them by remembering to place your donations next to your mailbox this Saturday. You can help by providing them with vegan options. Sometimes we take for granted how truly blessed we are. Attitude of gratitude ~ Be thankful that you and your family have the BIG blessing of having a roof over your heads and access to 3 meals a day (plus).
